Thriller Title Sequence Analysis
 Vertigo
1. Who is being represented in the opening scene? Are these representations positive or negative?
- the fact we only see her eye, nose and mouth which is a extreme close up could create a representation of her being scared. This in turn is a negative representation because the red could show where she is dangerous or there is danger near by from her. Also a stereotypical representation of woman of being helpless and in need of someone to save her.

2. What titles for each opening look like? Does this tell you that it is a thriller genre?

This is a screen grab of the opening title sequence in 'Vertigo'.
The screen grab shows the title 'Vertigo' in all caps and in bold white writing. This was done so that it could catch the attention of the audience to make sure they know the title of the film they are watching, which is Vertigo. Also the fact that the eye is in the background creates a sense of mysteriousness about what is going to happen within in the film, and that keep the audience on their toes, which means that they wouldn't know what to expect from the film. The final thing that I have noticed in this screen grab is that the background of the eye is red, and red in most cases signifies danger and that something bad is going to happen or blood is going to be spilt and that tells us about thriller genres that there is always someone who may have to die which keeps the audience guess and wondering who it is.

3. Analyse the camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scene. How do these technical areas make you aware that this is the thriller genre?
- All the shots in 'Vertigo' are all close ups or extreme close ups. The background music is spooky and mysterious which sets the scene for a thriller. Also the editing was slow paced which could imply that something is about to happen.

4. Does the narrative in the opening scene match the conventions of the thriller genre? How?
- Yes there were some elements of a thriller in this title sequence. The fact that there were only parts of faces shows there was secrets and suspicion.

5. Which production company made the film? How might this influence what appears in the film?
- A Paramount Pictures and Vista Vision made this film. This is will help them because Paramount is a conglomerate and this means they have more money and power so it would be able to fund them and they would be able to pick out things that they don’t like about the film.

6. What do you think might happen in the rest of the film? Give brief suggestions.
-that someone dies and people keep it a secret.

Jaws
1. Who is being represented in the opening scene? Are these representations positive or negative?
- the shark is being represented as a dangerous thing that swims deep in the ocean, also the people are represented as people who are carless and wild for them going into the water. for the shark, its an negative representation because it is shown as something that is dangerous which isn't good thing. For the people the representation is negative as well because they are careless and don't think about the water is dangerous and they could die, which they did in the opening scene.

2. What titles for each opening look like? Does this tell you that it is a thriller genre?

This is a screen grab of the opening title sequence in 'Jaws'.
The screen grab above shows the title 'Jaws' and the writing of the title is in white which makes it stand out so that the audience know they title of the film they are watching. The background is underwater its shows the audience it is a thriller film because no body knows what is under the deep blue sea and it is a mysterious place to be and the fact they have started the film with the camera under the sea  makes the audience to start to think what is under the sea.

3. Analyse the camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scene. How do these technical areas make you aware that this is the thriller genre?
-the point of view shot of the shark shows how low in the ocean shows how deep the shark goes when its under water and when it was going to eat the woman. Extreme close up to see the woman’s facial expressions to show she was scared and frighten.  The sound of the girl screaming made it people know that it was a thriller. Also the background music set the scene as it would be a thriller and it would be scary. the mise-en-scene of the 'Jaws' is under water which where people hardly ever go which shows us that its a thriller because by the camera going under the water its taking the audience where they will never want to be.

4. Does the narrative in the opening scene match the conventions of the thriller genre? How?
Yes, the fact that there is murder in it. Also the scary music which is a convection of a thriller is in this opening scene.

5. Which production company made the film? How might this influence what appears in the film?
'Jaws' was made by Zanuck/Brown Production and Universal Pictures. This is will help them because Universal Pictures is a conglomerate and this means they have more money and power so it would be able to fund them and they would be able to pick out things that they don’t like about the film.

6. What do you think might happen in the rest of the film? Give brief suggestions.
A number of people will die and get missing, then they will find out the reason is the shark and they will kill it.

Children of Men
1. Who is being represented in the opening scene? Are these representations positive or negative?
-in the opening scene, there are people who are watching the news and the main character comes in (Theo Faron) and doesn't seem to be interested in what’s going on in the new which could suggest he’s anti-social with everyone which is a negative representation.

2. What titles for each opening look like? Does this tell you that it is a thriller genre?

this is a screen grab of the opening title sequence in 'Children of Men'.

The fact that the writing is in white like the previous two which means that it stands out more and it make sure that the audience knows what they are watching. Also the fact that it is white text with a all black background, it could leave enigmas within the audience, due to the fact they don't have a clue what the film is all about because of the fact they are no clues or images to give the audience an idea of what they are watching, all they know is they are watching a film called 'Children of Men'.

3. Analyse the camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scene. How do these technical areas make you aware that this is the thriller genre?
- the camera shot in the screen grab which is a wide shot shows that people are going to die which shows clearly that its a horror. Also the slow paced music shows that it something is going to happen.
4. Does the narrative in the opening scene match the conventions of the thriller genre? How?
-the fact that it has to do with death  mean that it is part of the thriller conventions meaning it is a thriller film. Also the fact that the survival of the human race is close to dying out shows it’s a thriller.
5. Which production company made the film? How might this influence what appears in the film?
-Universal Pictures, A Strike Entertainment Production and Hit and Run Productions made this film. The fact that Universal Pictures made this film and it is a conglomerate. This would means they have more money and power so it would be able to fund them and they would be able to pick out things that they don’t like about the film.
6. What do you think might happen in the rest of the film? Give brief suggestions.
- That the human race will die out apart from a few people including the main character.

Panic Room
1. Who is being represented in the opening scene? Are these representations positive or negative?
- In this opening scene, no one is being represented only the city which shows the city to be a dangerous place which is a negative representation.

2. What titles for each opening look like? Does this tell you that it is a thriller genre?

This is a screen grab of the opening title sequence in 'Panic Room'.
The title of this film is not like the last three. In the last three the title of the film has always been in big white right with a dark background, where as in the film 'Panic Room' the title is almost see through written which opens more questions about what is going on and what is going to happen within the film. Also the background is of the city in which the film is set and that gives the audience a sense of where the story is being taken placed.
3. Analyse the camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scene. How do these technical areas make you aware that this is the thriller genre?
- The music is quite a dramatic type which would show that it is a thriller genre.
4. Does the narrative in the opening scene match the conventions of the thriller genre? How?
- No
5. Which production company made the film? How might this influence what appears in the film?
-Columbia Pictures Corporation, Hofflund/Polone and Indelible Picture all made this film. Columbia is a major studio and will the money to have funded this film which would have meant they can make major decisions on what should be on the film

6. What do you think might happen in the rest of the film? Give brief suggestions.
- That people will be trapped in a room or an enclosed area and people will panic.

Se7en
1. Who is being represented in the opening scene? Are these representations positive or negative?
- The opening scene, a mad man is being represented, s if he’s someone with a troubled mind and it is a negative representation because if a man like this was around in everyday life today, a lot of people would feel he show.

2. What titles for each opening look like? Does this tell you that it is a thriller genre?

This is a screen grab of the opening title sequence in 'Se7en'.

This is a screen grab is of ‘Se7en’ and like the first three titles the heading of the film is white writing that stands out so that the audience can see what the film is called in big. Also the black background could create enigmas within the audience not know what is going, however in the second you see the background of the crazy person at work which gives the audience an idea of what is going to happen which would result into the audince creating questions in thier minds about why is man doing this or what is his problem?
3. Analyse the camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scene. How do these technical areas make you aware that this is the thriller genre?
- Old fashion effect to it which shows maybe the guy who is plotting to kill people is using an old fashion way to so. also there are close ups on the guys fingernails and what he doing what he is doing which shows he’s a mysterious person who likes to harm himself which isn't normal. The music in the background is creepy so it creates a mood of tension.
4. Does the narrative in the opening scene match the conventions of the thriller genre? How?
- The fact that there going to a crime main storyline shows that that it has conventions of a thriller genre. Also the fact there is suspicion in it and there antagonist in it shows that there conventions of a thriller genre. In addition to that, there is a complex narrative which it’s a convention of a thriller.
5. Which production company made the film? How might this influence what appears in the film?
-Cecchi Gori Pictures and New Line Cinema made this film produced this film. This didn’t really influence the film because both of them are not the big producers in film and due to that they couldn’t really tell the director what they want to portrayed in the titles, and they can really make that much changes due to the fact they don't have that much money.
6. What do you think might happen in the rest of the film? Give brief suggestions.
- The police are going to find a psycho path that kills people for fun.

The History of Thriller Genre
Thriller genre is one of the most popular genre in the film industry and remains to be popular with it’s audience. The main aim of a thriller genre is to thrill the viewer of the film, also the films tend to be rushing, gritty, exciting, it drives the narrative, has tension, has surprises, fast-paced and most of the time have a cliff hanger. The different types of thrillers are action, psychological, crime, spy, conspiracy, disaster and political thriller. The convention of a thriller genre is that crime is the main story line, there is a complex narrative structure with clues and false paths, there is a protagonist and an antagonist, enigmas are established, extraordinary events happen and the opening scene normally shows the protagonist in danger.
The Three Apples and also One Thousand and One Nights and these are murder mystery.
Ancient epic poems like Epic of Gilgamesh, Homer's Odyssey and the Mahabharata use similar narrative techniques and conventions as modern thrillers. In the ancient poem Odyssey, the hero Odysseus makes a bare journey home after the Trojan War, battling extraordinary hardships in order to be reunited with his wife Penelope. He sees villains such as the Cyclops, a one-eyed giant, and the Sirens, whose sweet singing lures sailors to their doom. In most cases, Odysseus uses cunning instead of brute force to overcome his adversaries. Also the genre thriller comes about with thriller stories such as
Alfred Hitchcock began his career with his first silent film The Lodger (1926), a suspenseful Jack the Ripper story, followed by his next thriller Blackmail (1929), his first sound film. However, of Hitchcock's fifteen major features made between 1925 and 1935, he only made five thrillers, the two mentioned above plus  Number Seventeen, The Man Who Knew Too Much , and The 39 steps (1935). and one of the earliest spy films was Fritz Lang’s Spies (1928). Alfred Hitchcock continued with suspense-thriller by the production of Foreign Correspondent (1940), the haunting OScar-nominated Rebecca (1940). Shadow of a Doubt (1943) was Hitchcock's personal favorite and based upon the actual case of a 1920s serial killer known as The Merry Widow Murderer.
The 1970’s and 1980’s decade saw a violent start in the thriller genre, with Frenzy (1972), Hitchcock's first British film in almost two decades, being given an R rating for its vicious and explicit scene and Steven Spielberg's low-budget early TV movie Duel (1971). One of the first films about a fan being disturbingly obsessed with their idol was Clint Eastwood's directorial debut film, Play Misty for Me (1971).
Spy and conspiracy films were popular through this decade. Don Siegel's The Black Windmill (1974), Alan Pakula's The Parallax View (1974) Sam Peckinpah's final film, the plot twisting spy film The Osterman Weekend (1983), The Fourth Protocol (1987), derived from a script by the original novelist Frederick Forsyth, featured Michael Caine and Pierce Brosnan.
The 1990’sdecade started with Rob Reiner's Misery (1990). In one horrifying scene, she 'hobbles' his ankles so that he can't escape, a battered wife who left her aggressive husband to find a better life was vengefully pursued in Sleeping with the Enemy (1991), Curtis Hanson's The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992). From all this it brought out great thriller films such Pulp Fiction (1994), The Dark Knight (2008), Inception (2010), Goodfellas (1990), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), The Usual Suspects (1995) and Se7en (1995).
From the history to the present, thriller dominates the film screen. The genre today is the vehicle for filmmakers, with explosive action sequences, cool new technology and twisted plotting.

Iconic Thriller Director - Alfred Hitchcock
Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980) born in Leytonstone, London, England, the second son and youngest of three children of William Hitchcock, was on of the best British film director, producer and cameo appearance actor. He led the way for many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. After a successful career in British cinema in both silent films and early talkies, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood.
His career was more than half a century long, and he fashioned for himself a distinctive and recognizable directorial style. He establised the use of a camera made to move in a way that mimics a person's gaze, forcing viewers to engage in a form of voyeurism. He framed shots to maximize anxiety, fear, or empathy, and used innovative film editing. His stories frequently feature fugitives on the run from the law alongside "icy blonde" female characters. Many of Hitchcock's films have twist endings and thrilling plots featuring depictions of violence, murder, and crime, although many of the mysteries function as decoys or "MacGuffins" meant only to serve thematic elements in the film and the extremely complex psychological examinations of the characters. Hitchcock's films also borrow many themes from psychoanalysis and feature strong sexual undertones. Through his cameo appearances in his own films, interviews, film trailers, and the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents, he became a cultural icon.

Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films in a career spanning six decades. Often regarded as the greatest British filmmaker, he came first in a 2007 poll of film critics in Britain's Daily Telegraph, which said: "Unquestionably the greatest filmmaker to emerge from these islands, Hitchcock did more than any director to shape modern cinema, which would be utterly different without him. His flair was for narrative, cruelly withholding crucial information (from his characters and from us) and engaging the emotions of the audience like no one else." The magazine MovieMaker has described him as the most influential filmmaker of all-time, and he is widely regarded as one of cinema's most significant artists.

DVD/Poster Analysis

Conventions of a Thriller
In thriller films we see a lot of things, but there are things that we see on the big screen are all planned and all thriller films are set in a certain way to grab the attention of the audience. When planning a thriller film, you have to take into consideration these conventions:

-          Crime is the main story
-          A complex narrative structure with clues and false paths
-          Enigmas are established
-          Protagonist (good guy) drawn into a web of conspiracy  and trouble by the antagonist (bad guy)
-          Extraordinary events happening in ordinary situations
-          Themes of identity and voyeurism
-           The opening scene often places the protagonist in danger

As well as thriller being a genre on its own, there are different types of thriller and these are called a sub-genre. A sub-genre is a derivative of that genre. Examples of these are:
-          Action-Thriller
-          Conspiracy-Thriller
-          Crime-Thriller
-          Disaster-Thriller
-          Psychological-Thriller
-          Spy-Thriller
-          Supernatural-Thriller

In this blog I am going to talk about Conspiracy Thrillers.
Conspiracy thrillers (also known as ‘paranoid thrillers’) are generally about journalists or amateur investigators who get themselves mixed up in conspiracies which go all the way to the top. These are often used to “recreate” what might have happened during a historical event. The protagonist often struggles to uncover the conspiracy and contain ‘man-in-peril’ stories (very rarely ‘woman-in-peril’) and are similar to detective stories.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/68/Seven_(movie)_poster.jpg/220px-Seven_(movie)_poster.jpg The link below is a trailer of an example of a conspiracy film. The title of the film is Se7en (1995) directed by David Frincher, starring stars such as Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. This film is about two detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his way of working and doing his job which is to kill people. This is a conspiracy genre because there is an investigation going on and the one of the people investigating is an amateur in terms of being a detective and the fact that one of his first case is to deal with a serial killer. Also the fact that the protagonist is really struggling to get to the bottom of the case. As well as that, the fact that it is a male who is the amateur investigator which normally happens in these films.

Collage of Iconography associated with Thriller
After studying thriller films and looking at typical features and the iconography, I found out that all the films have everything which makes them special. This is a collage e of visual images that represent a Thriller genre. Some of the visual images have been taken from some famous or notable thriller films over the years.
Research into Typical Synopsis
Thriller films usually have a typical story line that happens, and they all have similar narratives. The fact that my group and I want to make the first 2 minutes of a thriller film, I would want to have almost the same narratives as the best thriller films  of all time. The example of a great thriller film is The Silence of the Lambs (1991).

The Silence of the Lambs, which was first viewed in 1991, directed by Johnathan Demme, written by Ted Tally but the book was written by Thomas Harris, starring stars such as Jodie Foster, Anothy Hopkins and Lawrence A. Bonny is all about a young FBI agent who goes by the name of Clarice Starling in the film is assigned to help find a missing woman to save her from a psychopathic serial killer ho skins his victims. Clarice attempts to gain a better insight into the twisted mind of the killer by talking to another psychopath Hannibal Lecter, who used to be a respected psychiatrist. FBI agent Jack Crawford believes that Lecter who is also a very powerful and clever mind manipulator have the answers to their questions to help locate the killer. Clarice must first try and gain Lecter's confidence before he is to give away any information. In the opening week this film made a massive $13 million whilst working on a budget of just around $19million. The reason why I know this is a thriller genre is because of the fact that crime is the main storyline in this film, and in most thriller films. Also I know it is a thriller film because it has a complex narrative to it and it leaves to audience with clues and with false paths to keep them on their feet and to keep them guessing what is going to happen next and linking back to that, an enigma is create where the film itself creates questions that the audience have to answer for themselves. The film reason that I know it is a thriller film is that it is all about murder and there is an investigation toward the murder and that happens in most thriller  films.
Still Frmae Analysis
In this still frame from the crime-thriller film named Colombiana (2011) which is about a female protagonist, Cataleya Restrepo (played by Zoe Saldana) who her parents were killed in front of her seeks out revenge from her parents killers. In this image, there are many aspects of the image that can be mentioned on.

In this shot, the protagonist, Cataleya is the only person in the shot and even though she is positioned on the left side of the image, she still shows her dominance in the shot and shows she is the main character. The shot used a mid-shot which shows half of her body, and that is effective because the audience are able to see half of her body and we are able to see the gum she is using. Also it always the audience to see the different side of the women which is countertypes the original stereotypical women. We can tell that she isn’t a typical stereotypical woman because of the clothes that she is wearing and the fact that she has a gun in her hand which isn’t normal for a woman to have in her hand.  Plus, the fact that she isn’t screaming as she is holding a gun but by the firing of it you can tell that she is quite but when she needs to she would make a lot of noise.  In addition to that, the serious stiff expression on her face shows the audience that she isn’t there to look pretty but she is there to do her job and get her job done as good as possible. The Lighting is natural and because of that you can see the light of the firing of the gun which allows this to be the focus on what she is doing. Also the fact that the background has no lighting could show how dark she could be or feel about the job that she is doing.

Nine Frame Structure Analysis of Thriller Film Opening

The shot above is a 9 frame shot of the film Se7en (1995). From the nine frame shot, straight away the audinece can see the film is based on someone who keeps themself secret and is plotting something and we can see this by the artisic work going on in shot 2, 6, 8 and 9. The view of this person being someone who is trying to plot something against someone is shown in all of the nine shots.
Frame one is the first clip we see in the film and this shows the man opening the book which looks like it has been kept for a long time and it could give us the idea that it is a diary or a note book of the person. The first thing we as the audience think is that this person is either the protagonist or the antagonist of the film which is a good thing because it create some question for the audience. As well as that you can see one of the credits for the film in a typewriter font.
Frame two shows a drawing of hands done by either the antagonist or the protagonist. The drawing might a be a sket of the antagonist ploting an evil plan and it could be showing his work and what he has come up with so far. Or it could be a sket by the protagonist trying to solve a case which puts it under the genre of a 'Conspiracy Thrillers'.
Frame three shows a person cutting themselves with a blade.  Even though the persons face hasn't been shown the audinece can tell that this person is the antagonist of the film. The persons hands are dirty show this could show that he doesn't care for be clean are hyginic or he has trapped himself in a non-hyginic envoirment causing himself to be dirty and unclean; which can also show that the person might be lonely and most proberly hates everyone and hates life, hence the reason for self harming himself.
Frame four shows a notepad in the corner of the shot and you can see a hand covered in tape which shows that the person has cut themselves many times which proves even more that this person is tired of life and tend to write a lot from all the notebooks he has; and the fact that the notepad is closed could create enygmas in the head of the audience and they may start to wonder what is in the notebook. In addtion to that, the fact that this person has kept the notebooks for so long could show that this person is living in the past and maybe this is the only thing that keeps him happy or the only thing that is keeping him alive. Also in the shot we can see the title of the film in the typewritter font in white font over a dark background to make sure that the film title stands out
Frame five shows the person (antagonist) writing down something on a piece of paper and we know this is the same person due to the fact the fingers are silmilar. We don't know what this person is writting down due to the fact the writing blured and unclear so the creates more questions for the audience to ask themselves and we can tell this is someone who keeps his private thoughs writen down and does not really speak to people.
Frame six shows a drawing of a child but his eyes are covered up. This could show that this person someone who keeps his itendty to himself and is someone who doen't want people to know who he is which creates enygmas for the audinece. Also the fact that it is a drawing of a child could show the innocent side of the man and show that he is vulnerable person.
Frame seven shows the same man putting wires down on to a book. The fact that the audience still don't know why he is doing this could show that he is a person who is very secrective and keeps his prss to himself.
Frame eight shows the person sowing pieces of paper together making a book out of it. In line with the pervious frames, this can show that this is a person who may like books and because nobody cares about him his can go out a go get his work published which could also mean that this person is crying for someone to hear him.
Frame nine is the final shot of this 9 shot frame, and it shows the man cutting out the word 'God' out of a dollar bill. This could show that he may be a man of his own religion and the way he lives life is the way he wants to live it and with nobody telling what to do. Also the fact that he is cutting out from a dollar bill could show his view on the world today; it could show us that he feels like there is no religion and money has taken over everyone and everything. Finally by him taking out 'God' out of the dollar bill, his motto in life could be 'money is the root to all evil'.
Iconic Sounds Connected with Thriller
I'm going to making my own 2 minute opening of a thriller film and I want it to be good as possible, and the reason why I want to research on iconic thriller sounds because it would give me inspiration to do so. To find out more I need to do some research into films iconic sound track of Jaws (1975):
Jaws
This thriller film is all about a great white shark that has be menacing a small island and a police chief, and marine scientist and a fisherman have set out to stop it. This films was directed Steven Spielberg and has one of the most iconic sounds in thriller film history. The music that is getting played in the opening of the film by John Williams is one of the most iconic sounds in film history. The pitch of the music starts of very low, almost a muffle sound, and the rhythm is the music is slow before it starts to speed up a bit. This is to create a sense of tension in the film and leaving the audience in a frame of mind where they are thinking ‘What is going on?’ ‘What is going to happen?’ in their next scene at their fire camp, there is dialogue and people socializing with each other and the only music you can hear is the one of the playing the harmonica and we go to the next scene and see a male and a female going skinny dipping, but on the girl gets in the water and that when new dramatic music begins to play? Whilst the girl is swimming the camera shows something coming from underneath her and it camera is at the shark point of view and that’s how the audience knows something bad is going to happen. Then we start to hear music as the shark gets closer to the girl, and as the shark the closer and you can feel the tension in the music, and when the shark finally gets the girl at first the music stops as she goes down into the water. Then as she starts to get dragged around and begins to scream, the music comes back on again and as she gets pulled back into the water the music stops and you can only hear the sound of the ocean. This shows that if not for the music the audience wouldn’t have known that she was in trouble, and on the music helped us to know.

Paramount Pictures Corporation all started back in 1912, when Adolph Zukor got American distribution rights to Sarah Bernhardt's four-reel film. The success of the opening of the film Queen Elizabeth on July 12th, 1912 was the first full length drama shown in the US and that made Zukor join the group of Famous Player Film Company. This group began to produces movies in New York, and made films such as The Prisoner of Zenda and The Count of Monte Cristo, and one year later Zukor invested in a film distribution company that goes by then name of Paramount Pictures. On June 28th 1916 was the day that Paramount history changed. The Jesse L. Lasky Company, which was producing films in Hollywood, merged with Famous Players to form the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation. The corporation consolidated its production and distribution divisions, and audiences began seeing the iconic "Paramount Pictures" label.
With this new merge, it generated enough money to create a new Hollywood studio and cost $1 million and from that they received the very first Academy Award for Best Picture from the member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. During the years, Paramount create some of the most iconic movies in American film history and that includes Romeo & Juliet (1968) which won two Academy Awards; True Grit (1969); The Godfather (1972) which won three Academy Awards and is considered the film that elevated the gangster drama genre; and Chinatown (1974). As well as that they have produced other great movies such as Star Trek (1978, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1989); Airplane! In 1986, Paramount got a 22% share of the domestic box-office revenue which made them twice as welathy as thier closest competitor. In stiduo had five of the years's ten top-grossing films: Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, The Gloden Child and Freeis Buller's Day. Now Paramount is one the most popular production companies and they are still going strong today. They are great at the making of thriller films and in recent times they are now producing films such Mission Impossible, Eagle Eye, Paranormal Activity, The Ring, Rules of Engagement, Red Eye, What lies Beneath and many more great films.

- Imitable behaviour

- Nudity

Below are the certitficates the BBFC give to films:
It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a ‘U’ film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. ‘U’ films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer comforting scenes of any violence, threat or horror.

If a work is particularly suitable for a nursery to view alone, this will be indicated in the Consumer Advice.

General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.

Children over the age of eight would be able to watch a PG film, but any age under that would have to be accompanied by a parental figure when watching the film due to the fact that they are content may upset younger or more sensitive children.

Exactly the same criteria are used to classify works at ‘12A’ and ‘12’. These categories are awarded where the material is suitable, in general, only for those aged 12 and over. Works classified at these categories may upset children under 12 or scenes that some parents will find unsuitable for their child.

The ‘12A’ category exists only for cinema films. No one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult and films classified ‘12A’ are not recommended for a child below the age of 12. An adult may take a younger child if they feel that the film is suitable for that particular child. In such circumstances, full responsibilities lie to the adult for allowing a child under 12 to view the film.

The ‘12’ category exists only for video/DVD works. No one younger than 12 may rent or buy a ‘12’ rated video work. The content in films of this age may have things like horror, mild language, mild nakedness and mild violence.

No-one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work. The content in films of this age rating may contain language, sexual themes, volience, inappropriate behaviour and nudity.

No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video work. The content in films of this age rating may include things like discrimination, drug usage, language, nudity, inappropriate behaviour, sexual themes and violence.

The ‘R18’ category is a special and legally restricted classification primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, and video works may be supplied to adults only in licensed sex shops. ‘R18’ videos may not be supplied by mail order. In terms of the content of the film, this rating may include everything that the films rating is based on.

Pearl and Dean
This is the research into our target audience of three particular films. I went in the film salt in more detail. As the Thriller genre is the one my group need to focus on for the main task.

Price: B+

Estimated box office: £10,000,000

Genre(s): Thriller
Director(s): Phillip Noyce
Film Cast:  Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Daniel Olbrychski and August Diehl
Certificate: 12A
Distributor:  Sony Pictures Intl.
Brief plot or narrative: In the final scene of the movie, Salt has to flee from the U.S government and the CIA because no one can believe her that she actually saved the President and stopped the Nukes. But what about the President? He was there. He saw Ted Winter kill all his staff and threaten him, surely he could say that Salt was not responsible.

This film is similar to my groups thriller film due to the fact is it someone changing their identity and the fact that he is obviously running from something in the start of the film.  The difference is that instead of him having this hidden talent and secret from the start of the film, he gains help from someone that he doesn’t know and that give him the power and help that he needs.
The image above is the audience that my film is going to be aimed at.

Youtube Documentary of Thriller
The name of the video i watched was called "Trubys Screenwriting - How to Write the Thriller Genre #2" and I watched it on youtube. The link below is the clip:

The video was all about the different techniques you can use in terms of writing a plot or screenwriting a thriller genre.
The first technique was how you connect love to the thriller plot and there are two ways in which you can do it: The first way is that you make the protagonist have a decsion to make which is faith vs scepticism (thier faith in love). The choice is that the hero has and it is ususally a women in a thriller:
She could make the leap of faith in love and believe in total love but risk being murdered because the lover may or may not be a killer. A perfect example of this is the film What Lies Beneath (2000) is a film where the husband of the woman wants to kill her due to the fact that she found out that he has killed a girl who he has had an affair with . The other way is the she could fail to make the leap of faith and protect herself but the thing about this is that she would lose the great love of her life. A good example of the is Salt (2010) where to keep her identity the woman's  lover was killed infront of her which sparked her hatred of everyone. What this first technique does is give love a life and death that is a stakes and thriller audience really likes it.

the second technique is there are to lines that you need to think about when making a thriller these line are the personal line and the crime line. In this second technique you have to show the heros unique need would be sloved in the act uncovering the crime which means that you connect the heros personal line with the crime line.
An example of this is the film Taken (2008) due to the fact that it is personal because they have kidnapped his daughter and crime because kidnapping someone is illegal.

Understanding Camera shots/ angles/ movement/ in general
Match on action, over the shoulder shot, 180 degree rule and  shot reverse shot and four of the basics of filming and they ae the main things you have to know when you are filming and editing anything becuase if you dont follow these basics your production would go wrong.
Match on action
A match on action, is a technique is used when editing film footage and it is a cut that bring together two different views of the same action. What the match on action shot does is that ti brings two shots togehter, and by careful editing it makes it seems as the seem that the motion continues uninterrupted. If your not careful with match on action shots, then you could have situation where you get a jump shot in your editing. The diagram below is an example of a match on action shot:
 http://gemmamerritt.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/match-on-action.jpg

Over the shoulder shot
this show is taken from behid the person who is talking, in other words the subject. Over the shoulder shots help the establish the position of each person wothen the shot and get the see reactions from both subjects in the shot and it helps the audience to see what the other persons point of view is like. It common to cut shots during a conversation to see the view between the different speakers. The diagram below is an example of an over the shoulder shot.

 http://accad.osu.edu/~midori/03_763/cinema/over_shoulder.jpg

180 degree rule
this is a one of the biggest and well known rule when it comes to filming. It is basically a guideline that states that both of the subjects in the same scene should always be filmed on either the left or the right side of thr subject and the camera has to be on that side throughtout that scene. The image below show what the rule is about:

Shot reverse shot
this is a film technique where one of the subject is shown looking at the other subject and then the other subject is shown looking back at the first subject. This image below shows this:

I asked 20 random people to do my questionnaire and this is the results I got from it:

Question 1

Most of the people I asked was males, 12 out of the 20 people were males. This shows nothing really just that I asked 4 more males than females. On the other hand, it could affect the result due to the fact ia sked more males than females could say this is what most males think, rather than what both gender think.

Question 2

Most of the people that I asked were between the ages of 16-19, due to the fact that I asked a lot of people in my college who happen to be in that age ranges that were most popular. Like question 1, this shows nothing and it only shows the ages of people I asked. On the other hand, the result could not generalilse all the ages which means that it could be bias of people in one particula age group.

Question 3

This question the results were 50/50, 10 people saying they do go cinema often, and the other half saying they don't as much. The group that circled the answer 'no', most of them said to me when I asked them why, that they do go cinema but they don't go as often as they would like too due to a time factor.

Question 4

Most of the people that filled out my questionnaire (85%) said they enjoy/like going to the cinema. When asked why. Most of them said it’s because of that going out feeling and the fact that the cinema screen is nothing like the T.V they have at home. The 15% that circled the answer no said it's because they find the process of going 'long' and at times a waste of money.

Question 5

Everyone that took my questionnaire knew what the word 'Genre' meant. Most of the people (65%) said that the genre of action is their favorite genre, and their reasons for this was because it make you laugh and it creates ideas (enigmas) in their heads of what happens next. The next genre they said that they find their favorite is comedy, due to the fact it makes them laugh. When ask what type of comedy they like most of them, if not all said they like Rom-Com.

Question 6

Crime (30%), suspense (25%), death (20%) and fast paced (15%) were the four top answers in my questionnaire. When I asked why people expected these things, most of them said that because you just expected either someone killing or doing a bad thing and someone is trying to find out who this person is or trying to find this person who they know.

Question 7

Most of the people who did my question (95%) said they do watch thriller films. The person that said no, the reason why they said that was because they don't find it interesting and they felt they are boring and predictable.

Question 8

At first, due to the fact that some of the people that I asked were not Media students, so I had to explain to them what a sub-genre is and give examples of them such as political thriller and gave an example of a film (The Interpreter (2005). After I did that, most of them (35% each) said crime and supernatural thrillers.

Main Task - Planning Stage

Group Members

The names shown below are the people that are part of the main task, and we were given the title of "group 1", which was picked by my media teacher Laura Hoopwood. These are the names below:

- Seun Jonah
- Denzel Aifuwa-Morgan
- John Martins
- Kelsey Rocastle-Hamilton

The main task will be a thriller opening (no longer than 2 minutes).

Initial Ideas for the Main Task

Below is the initial ideas that my group came up with for the film, we decided to use the name "Re-Birth" as the films title. These are the ideas that we had:

The plot of Re-Birth

Re-Birth is about a man who goes by the name of Steve Jones, who is fighting another man and finds himself weaker than the other man. Then gets knocked out by the stronger man, then eventually finds himself in a mysterious location and is confronted by a demon who offers him Immortal Power so that he can then avert the affects of knock-out and win the fight. But the Demon gives the man a choice, between Immortal power or die from the injuries, he sustained in the fight. He agrees and shakes the Demon's hand and from that he changes in his apperance, voice and his strength, then he decides to change his name from Steve Jones, to SJ. The inital ideas above also illustrates the types of props, music, location, scenes, etc... of the potential thriller opening.

From this plot we noticed that idea for the thriller is a Supernatural Thriller.

Main Task Film - Script

Below is our group's film script that I wrote (as highlighted in Orange below)

RE-BIRTH: SCENE 1: SHOOTING SCRIPT
The audience gets a shot of the woods, the camera is panning a wide shot of the area
CUT TO:
The character STEVE JONES running in the woods being chased by something but at this stage no one knows what by. Different cuts of him running from different angles.
Eventually rest on the TREE breathing heavily there from nowhere the demon of darkness appears and the dialogue begins
DEMON
(Clapping his hands)
Well done, oh well done son
STEVE
(shocked reaction)
W-w-where did you come from?
DEMON
(still walking towards him)
Oh, don't worry about me, I'm here for you
STEVE
(confused look on his face)
DEMON
I'm just here to help you
(raises his hand out)
I see you've got good stamina on you
STEVE
(still with a confused face)
Thanks, ermm- thank you
(CONTINUED)
RE-BIRTH: SCENE 1: SHOOTING SCRIPT
DEMON
But how about I make you the strongest man in the world, how about I make you the fasted man in the world, all you have to do is sign a deed with me...
STEVE
B-but who are you though?
DEMON
(Smiling)
I'm just a man, a man, a man that can help you solve all your problems... Now shake my hand
(pulls hand out
STEVE
What shake it?
DEMON
Yeah, shake it

The hand meet and there is a close up on the hand shake, whilst the Demon is speaking random word which would sound like a spell is being casted. When this is happening, the earth beings to shake
CUT TO:
The new Steve but changes his name to just SJ. There is a shot of him getting up from the ground and looking up and down at himself, most in particular looking at the ring in his finger, because that holds all the power he possessive. Then there is a 360o shot of him and there is a voice over say
SJ
(Where am I? What I’m doing here? What happened to me? I don’t understand. Where did I go to? What did he do to me? Where am I? Someone help me, pleaseeee)
(falls to the ground)
(CONTINUED)
RE-BIRTH: SCENE 1: SHOOTING SCRIPT
Ahhhhhhhhhh, where am I, where am I!!!!
Passer by DR JONES tries to help SJ
DR JONES
Are you okay? What's the matter with you?
SJ
GET OFF ME NOWWW!!!!!!
(Knee’s and throws Dr. Jones away with his new extraordinary strength, then walks over Dr. Jones)

Then we get the title of the film whilst the film theme song is getting play in the back ground.

Alterations made along the way

A change concerning the main task: One of our group members Kelsey has announced that she will no longer be able to film with the group (group 1) on the main task unfortunately this left us with one less film star (actress).
Now the group agreed that will have to adapt and continue to plan for the main task without Kelsey.

However it's confirmed that Darren Smith from another group will assist us, by appearing in the fighting scene for the main task thriller opening (Rebirth).

Planing for the main task

The images below are me and the other members of my group planning our main task.

When planning for the main task, I outlined possible locations where the filming for the main task may be held.
By the end of this 45 minute discussion we all decided that filming for the main task, will take place in these 2 locations as indicated by the map (below).

Picture from Google Images
Label "1" indicates where filming for the first scenes will take place (outside the college grounds). At the nearby forest near the 'Queen Mary's hospital'.
Label "2" indicates where filming for the last scenes will take place (Inside the school premisses) on the college field.

The reason for these locations is because we all thought that it creates that mysterious setting, which will allow the audience to create their own enigmas on this narrative. As we all thought that a location with minimal activity (i.e a lack of cars driving, etc) will be less disracting for the audince but most importantly the film stars when acting. This will
keep the audience glued to the opening thriller film from my group. And what it's trying to showcase.

Main task - Update (Log) - 30/03/12

Filming for the main task (for group 1) will take place after the Eater break on the 1st day back (16/04/12). This is because we as a group must set a date to when it's convenient for ALL group members to film for the main thriller task.

Main task  Update (Log) 18/04/12

Due to alteration, the orginal plot for Re-Birth isn't going to happen. The fight scene won't be able to take place because the person (Darren) is injured and we don't want to risk future injuries to him, but we have planned another sernario to happen.

Main task - Update (Log) 20/04/12

Filming for the main task (for group 1) took place on the 20/04/12, which was completed on the day. The location of the filming was held outside the college at the nerby forest located near the Queen Mary's Hospital and finially the last scene was held on the college field. The reason for this location is to create the Thriller setting which then could transmit to the audeince and allows them to create their own enigmas, as this is one important factor or convention a Thriller genre must show. As the whole reason for this main task is to meet the conventions of a Thriller genre.

Alterations Made along the way: However there has been many alterations made in the lead up to this mainstask. As the whole narrative has been changed, due to the fact that John (from the group) couldn't make the outlined date when filming was supposed to commerce. So me, Denzel and Darren had to be creative and make use of that day and the very little time
available (Aprox. 2 hours), to film only the first scenes in the 1st loaction (the forest near Queen Mary's Hospital).

Gladly the filming went to plan. And John announced that he will be avaliable to film his scene (which happens to be the last scene) on the date 23/04/12.

Equipment used (for the main task)

Nikon HD - Camera
Nikon HD - Camera

The camera our group used was a Nikon HD camera. We all thought it was suitable because this technological device is portable and handheld, which allowed the camera man to easily record scenes as the cameraman can freely move his wrist while in possession of the portable camera. Even in the bad wether conditions that my group did exprience. Also the dialogue some of scenes had was easily recorded with barely or no problems.

Finally the audio the Nikon camera was able to capture was significantly good and had high quality. This helped the group imensely, as the when filming none of us had to raise our voices significantly loud becuase the camera was able to pick up the sound.

However due to the camera's good audio dector features this enable one of our scenes to have noise from a passing by car which made the the actors voice seem very low. On the otherhand this was soon corrected by the final cut pro feature, of audio modify, which in somewhat solved the problem but not completely.

Integral - Memory Stick

Integral - Memory Stick
We also used a memory card that can be put into the camera easily and that can easily be put into the integral memory stick (or USB). This had allow our group to export our raw footage from the Nikon HD camera our own computer. This saved us a lot of time, to focus on other issues concerning the development of the film.

Props used (for the main task)

Ring (jewelry)
The ring is suppose to connote power (immortality). As the man character sees the changes in his appearance (physically, vocally, etc...) but firstly he notices his hands have appeared bigger and much longer. Which indicated to hime that something has changed. Apart from that, there was no other props that we used.

Production Company
The name that my group and I decide was Blade's Production. The reason we chose this name was because we wanted a name that people would remember and that we wanted something that people would be able to recongnise when they see it. On top of the that, we liked the name and we all came to agreement with the name in less than 30 seconds because we all tought of the same name.

Above is the logo of our production company and I personally like it because of the blade and the writting is in bold so everyone can see it.
